25-year-old Brum student Tom Leonard is here to disrupt the gardening world, in the best way possible. Known to his 18,000 Instagram followers as ‘Daisy Desire – The Drag Queen Gardener’, Tom made history as the as the first drag queen to be featured on BBC Gardeners’ World last month.He often heads straight from his gardening jobs, muddy kneed, to his sewing and make up classes so he can elevate his drag. Tom first picked up a trowel in 2019 after a difficult break up.Once he got started he couldn’t get enough of it, and started sharing his exploits on Instagram, amassing a huge following of like-minded individuals and drag enthusiasts.Speaking to BirminghamLive fresh from completing a year’s course at Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Tom said: “When I used to live in Sutton Coldfield I used to pass the allotments on the train to work in John Lewis, I used to be a merchandiser.”I used to have to get the train into Birmingham where I’d pass allotments, I would always wonder what they were doing, I had never really gardened before. It wasn’t until break up came to an end, the next day I got an allotment, not knowing anything about gardening.”Tom has shared pictures from his Drag Queen Gardener’ Instagram with BirminghamLive.
