My genre is Modern Country music, not to be confused with the more traditional Country from the 70s and 80s. Most of my songs are from 2000 onwards, although I do play a couple of 90s songs occasionally. On the other hand, I love finding new singles and being able to play recent releases too, so the songs span about 30 years.
I chose the genre mainly for the lyrics. There’s something about a song that not only tells a story, but tells it in a brilliant way. There are songs about everything when it comes to Modern Country and some of them are beautiful. You can go from a song about heartbreak to something about life to something about beer and trucks, in the space of a few songs. There are all different influences in the genre too – from rock elements to pop and others in between.
I love that ‘wow’ feeling when listening to new music – when a chorus kicks in or something and you just know that this song is really good. Sometimes I hear the first few seconds of an album and I’m expecting great things. If there’s a new release it could be okay, or it could be the best thing I’ve heard for a while. The song could be about such a range of topics. I guess that’s one of the reasons I like Modern Country music – you never really know what you’re going to hear.
